Dickens raised awareness of the plight of the poor in England. His writing and publishing influenced public policy. He never stopped thinking about or writing about the poor, their worries and the dangerous conditions in which they lived.

Solzhenitsyn wrote essays warning of the weak will displayed by Western governments in the face of Communist aggression. He also warned against the dangers of materialism. Solzhenitsyn criticized the ugliness and spiritual vapidity of Western pop culture, including television and much of popular music.
